I hate my scars, I whispered
running dirty fingers over my face and
arms and chest and back
and every inch of marked skin
you did not kiss them away
did not pay me sweet compliments
did not lie
you only looked at me and said,
Shall I show you my own?
and when I nodded
you inched out of your clothes
with none of your usual candor or slyness
or moon-bright smiles
there were more than I expected, a map
of flesh on flesh
I ran my fingers over every one
a story on your skin
and I didn’t ask questions
